Piano Lessons in Melbourne

Jenny Ford offers professional, private piano lessons in Melbourne from both the Mitcham and Parkville studios. She teaches classical and modern styles.

Her piano lessons cater for the youngest (or oldest) beginner to the most advanced tertiary student.

She graduated with an honours degree in Music Performance from Melbourne University in 1984, majoring in piano. She is a very experienced piano teacher who taught for many years at a tertiary level at the Melba Conservatorium of Music (a division of Victoria University) as well as at various grammar schools, including Methodist Ladies’ College and Melbourne Grammar.

Although trained as a classical pianist, she also teaches a range of modern styles from ragtime to jazz, to easy-listening ballads. As the piano is such a versatile instrument, Jenny encourages all students to broaden their musical appreciation by incorporating the study of a range of styles, including learning to play from chord charts.

Jenny believes all music students should be proficient at reading music and not just trying to play by ear. To this end, she believes that the theory of music is an important element of musical training and she incorporates the study of music theory in every piano lesson from the outset.

Jenny has written a progressive course for beginner students, which develops not just reading, but eye-hand co-ordination, independence between the hands and technical facility.

Her classical students play from a series of books that contain material she has compiled and edited. The emphasis is on developing an understanding of the various classical musical styles through a careful selection of music that is enjoyable to play. Theory is taught from the comprehensive course she has co-written with Don.

Students wishing to sit for examinations can request to be prepared for AMEB, ANZCA, ABRSM or Trinity College exams.
